How Ear Acupuncture Can Help You

Similar to foot reflexology, a map of the body can be laid out on the ear, with the head at the lobe, and feet near the top of the ear. Inner organ points are located in the visible deeper part of the ear. The standard anti-stress, or "detox", treatment consists of 5 needles placed in each ear in points to calm the spirit and parasympathetic nervous system; and support the kidneys, liver, and lungs. Just one or two points can be used by anyone wishing to de-stress with good results as well. With sensitive or very active people or children, a magnet can be taped on the back of the ear and left on [for some days]. Most people find even just the magnet very calming.

The ear protocol I offer twice a week in a drop-in setting is based on one developed in New York City for support in withdrawal and abstention from addictive substances. Originally developed in a methadone clinic, it has been proven successful with other drugs and alcohol, as well as quitting smoking. Patients also find it helpful in refraining from other habitual problem patterns such as overeating.

The 5 point ear protocol is now used extensively around the world in conjunction with counseling and 12-step, or A.A.-type programs, for effective treatment of substance abuse. It also is used in healing from Post-Traumatic Stress. The Red Cross paid for the treatment protocol for firefighters and rescue workers after 9/11 in New York. It is also being offered to Katrina refugees. Ear acupuncture is also being used in Uganda, where people are unable to get proper drugs for A.I.D.S.; and in Central America with refugees of political turmoil.

Some of the power in auricular [ear] acupuncture is in the quiet atmosphere of group treatment, much in the way meditating can be more profound in a group. People sometimes read, may fall asleep, or talk quietly. Although not an individualized treatment, it provides a low cost method where many people can receive non-verbal support. I encourage people to take 20 minutes or more to rest and recharge while the needles do their work. I offer two regular sessions per week on an ongoing basis, [just prior to a nearby 12 step meeting]. Cost is $15. If time allows, I may vary treatment somewhat according to individualized needs such as high blood pressure or minor injuries.

Times are Mondays from 5-6 pm and Thursdays from 11-noon.

Call ahead on holidays or check blog for holiday cancellations.

Ongoing patients can receive simple treatments on a sliding scale basis during the ear clinic times.
